The Summit County ADM Board offers substance abuse resources for residents of this county, and there are more than 20 treatment centers located in this area. Residents can also travel to Ohio Recovery Center for comprehensive residential care.

Summit County, the fourth-most populated county in Ohio and home to the city of Akron and several Cleveland suburbs, faces a severe public health challenge in the form of drug and alcohol addiction.

While fentanyl and other synthetic opioids are of particular concern, this drug abuse crisis also includes stimulants like methamphetamine and cocaine, diverted pharmaceutical products, and alcohol abuse.

Fortunately, the county is home to a network of addiction treatment centers with services overseen by the County of Summit Alcohol, Drug Addiction & Mental Health Services Board, or ADM.

Summit County residents also have the option of traveling outside of their home county to treatment centers like Ohio Recovery Center in Van Wert.

Summit County Substance Use & Overdose Data

In 2020, Summit County reported the 6th highest number of accidental overdoses in all of Ohio (217).

This was a slight increase from the year before (201), and significantly lower than the county’s high-water mark in 2016 (298), which occurred during the initial wave of fentanyl distribution in the United States.

However, the county’s age-adjusted rate of unintentional drug overdose deaths during 2020 was 42.4/100,000, which was slightly lower than Ohio’s overall average during the same period (45.6/100,000).

According to the Summit ADM Board, fentanyl (and its analogues) remains the single deadliest drug of abuse in the county in terms of overdose death, followed by methamphetamine, cocaine, drinking alcohol, and other opiates.

Alcohol & Drug Rehab Options In Summit County

There are approximately 23 licensed and accredited rehab centers operating in Summit County, with the largest concentration of providers located in and around downtown Akron, Cuyahoga Falls, and Fairlawn.

These providers collectively offer a broad spectrum of addiction treatment services for Summit County residents, including, but not limited to:

Medical Detox

Detoxification is the uncomfortable and sometimes risky process of quitting an addictive substance and allowing it to fully work out of your system, despite the withdrawal symptoms this process may cause.

In order to avoid potentially serious complications like dehydration, mental health crises, relapse, overdose, and seizures, healthcare professionals strongly urge that anyone beginning the recovery process work through withdrawal with the help of a professional detox program.

Inpatient Treatment

Inpatient, or residential treatment, takes place in a specialized treatment facility offering short-term or long-term stays.

In these programs, you will be closely supervised as you participate in behavioral therapy and other personalized treatment services designed to give you the motivation, tools, and support you’ll need to maintain your sobriety long-term.

Inpatient treatment programs also support their graduates through addiction recovery aftercare such as employment counseling, sober living housing, case management, and support groups like Alcoholics Anonymous (AA).

Outpatient Treatment

Alternatively, regular and intensive outpatient programs, including partial hospitalization programs, are available to support you if you don’t need to enroll in an inpatient program or if you’ve already finished one.

Outpatient care tends to be flexible and accommodating, fitting into your life as you work through your recovery while you continue to live in your home.

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)

Medication-assisted treatment programs are also available from select service providers, as certain FDA-approved medications are available (in combination with mental health counseling) if you’re recovering from alcohol or opioid dependency.

Payment Options Accepted In Summit County

Payment types accepted by drug or alcohol rehab providers vary depending on the specific program, but generally include:
