Although both men and women are at risk for drug or alcohol addiction in Ohio, each gender has a unique experience with substance use disorder and recovery. As a result, some patients may prefer a men’s-only alcohol and drug addiction treatment setting.

Both men and women in Ohio live with substance abuse and drug addiction in record-high numbers.

In study after study, men disproportionately suffer from substance use disorders, drug overdose, and other chronic long-term health issues related to alcohol or drug abuse when compared to women. However, regardless of gender, all substance use disorders are treatable.

In fact, a variety of resources are available in Ohio to help men face drug addiction head-on and work towards a lasting, healthy, and positive recovery.

Substance Use & Addiction In Men

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, women and men in the United States who abuse drugs are equally likely to develop a substance use disorder.

However, men are more likely to abuse drugs of all types than women, to mix drugs, and to need emergency healthcare and/or die from overdose.

There are also more men than women in treatment for substance use disorders at any given time (approximately 65% men vs. 35% women nationwide).

Additionally, men are more likely to experience severe and potentially harmful symptoms of withdrawal than women, sometimes requiring closer supervision and medical intervention during medical detoxification.

Men’s Only Addiction Treatment Programs

Gender-specific addiction treatment centers have services tailored towards men and their specific needs, providing a structured environment for recovery without certain pressures, distractions, and triggers that interfere with the addiction treatment process.

Gender-specific care can make a big difference, as men often have different and distinct responses to substance abuse treatment when compared to women:

  • men tend have different root causes for beginning substance abuse, especially relating to social pressure and experimentation, and will have developed different habits and triggers related to substance abuse
  • men also tend to have different emotional responses to detoxification and drug treatment than women, especially when it comes to anger and reactivity
  • men may be more reluctant to participate in the recovery process, requiring a different approach to build motivation, comradery, investment, and buy-in
  • men who have experienced trauma, abuse, or other mental health disorders as a component of their substance use disorder often have a more difficult time being vulnerable while discussing these elements in therapy, especially in mixed company

How To Choose A Gender-Specific Treatment Program

Men’s rehab programs aren’t available everywhere, and you may have to travel to locate the right inpatient treatment services for you. Or, a men’s-only drug rehab center may be available right around the corner.

Inquire About Gender-Specific Care

Begin your search by contacting your local addiction and mental health services board through their informational helpline. You can also contact treatment facilities directly and inquire about gender-specific care.

Intake & Assessment

Once you make contact, the providers leading the intake process will evaluate your condition and develop a personalized treatment plan with evidence-based interventions.

Treatment services are designed to help you stop using drugs or alcohol while developing the tools, strategies, and motivation required to continue in sobriety long after you leave your chosen rehab facility.

Addiction Treatment Options For Men In Ohio
