Can My Family Send Me Letters While I’m In Treatment?

Receiving a letter from a supportive family member while in treatment can be a big mood booster. We encourage family members to stay in touch, including through mail, phone calls, and/or visits.

When seeking treatment for addiction or a mental health crisis, the support of family can be crucial. Here at Ohio Recovery Center, we encourage family members to send letters.

Getting a letter from a family member can help boost your mood, remind you that you are loved, and motivate you to keep moving forward with your recovery.

You can receive letters and packages at ORC any day the postal service delivers. You can also send mail to loved ones while here. All incoming and outgoing mail, however, will be checked by our staff for prohibited items to ensure everyone’s safety.

Keeping Communication Lines Open

Besides mail, other ways to keep in touch with family members while at ORC may include phone calls and in-person or virtual visits. Your care team will discuss these options with you and schedule them when appropriate.

Participating In Your Recovery

Other options that your care team may recommend to benefit your recovery are family psychoeducation and family therapy sessions.

Psychoeducation helps your family members learn more about your condition, the recovery process, and how to support you in healthy ways. It can also connect them with peer support resources, such as Al-Anon and others. These sessions may be solely for your family members or also include you, and can take place in person or virtually.

Family therapy is another option that may be deemed beneficial for you and your family members. These sessions may also be offered in person or remotely, focusing on topics such as healthy communication and boundaries, family dynamics, behavior modification, and more.
