Anxiety Disorder Treatment Options

Whether experiencing a crisis or looking for a “step down” residential program following inpatient psychiatric care, you can find the mental health treatment you need at our state-of-the-art facility.

Our care team will assess your needs shortly after your arrival and provide you with a personalized treatment plan outlining your care, beginning with stabilization if required.

Medication

Medication management services provided by our psychiatrist and psychiatric nurse practitioners may include prescribing and/or adjusting medications, such as the dosage, and monitoring the effects until the desired outcome is achieved.

FDA-approved medications for anxiety disorders include:

  • SSRI antidepressants
  • benzodiazepines
  • beta-blockers

When taken as directed, these prescription drugs can reduce your symptoms of anxiety. You may be monitored for side effects while taking anti-anxiety medication.

Psychotherapy

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) can help you understand where your anxiety is coming from and learn how to manage it. CBT is a common, effective treatment approach for many mental health conditions, including anxiety disorders.

Exposure therapy, a form of CBT, can slowly and safely increase your exposure to stressful situations that you may otherwise avoid. It teaches you how to handle these experiences, normalizing them so that they no longer bother you.

Due to the initial stress that exposure interventions often involve, you will also be taught simple relaxation techniques.

Other Treatment Options

Other treatment options for anxiety disorders may include attending support groups, learning and practicing mindfulness meditation, group therapy, or adopting an exercise routine. The residential program at ORC provides all of these options and more for a comprehensive approach to lasting recovery.

Learn More About Anxiety Disorders

If you have an anxiety disorder, you may feel intense fear, pressure, or dread when going about your daily life. People with panic disorder may experience sudden onsets of these feelings, known as panic attacks.

You may experience symptoms of anxiety nearly constantly, or they may be triggered by specific stressors, such as social situations.

Anxiety disorders can also have physical symptoms, such as a racing heart, muscle tension, excessive sweating, and digestive problems.

Types Of Anxiety Disorders

There are several different types of anxiety disorders, which may have unique symptoms.

Types of anxiety disorders include:

  • generalized anxiety disorder (GAD)
  • panic disorder
  • social anxiety disorder
  • obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD)
  • phobias, such as agoraphobia

For example, frequent and unexpected panic attacks are the key symptom of panic disorder, while common symptoms of GAD include having difficulty concentrating, being easily fatigued, and often feeling restless or irritable.

Diagnosis

Symptoms of anxiety disorders can overlap with other health problems, such as high blood pressure, upset stomach, and difficulty sleeping. Your primary care doctor can help determine the cause of your symptoms.

If it is likely that you have an anxiety disorder, you may be referred to a mental health professional or treatment program.

Mental health professionals at Ohio Recovery Center and elsewhere use the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) and other professional tools and experience to determine a diagnosis.

Risk Factors

If you have a close relative who has been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, you have an increased risk of experiencing an anxiety disorder. Stressful events in your life, such as abusive relationships or childhood trauma, can also increase your risk.

Anxiety disorders are common. For example, in a February 2023 survey by the U.S. Census Bureau, over 33 percent of Ohioans reported symptoms of an anxiety disorder or major depressive disorder, slightly higher than the rest of the U.S.
