Adams County is a rural area of Ohio with high rates of drug and alcohol addiction but little access to addiction treatment services. Residents can consider treatment options outside the county, including inpatient detox and residential treatment services at Ohio Recovery Center.

Like some rural areas of Ohio, Adams County faces unusually high rates of drug abuse and accidental overdose deaths for its population.

In Adams County, all substance abuse treatment services are overseen by the Adams, Lawrence, Scioto ADAMHS Board (Alcohol & Drug Addiction and Mental Health Services Board), which is based in Portsmouth, Ohio

Residents struggling with behavioral health issues can contact the board’s helpline to access drug rehab centers in the county, which include at least two outpatient programs and an inpatient/outpatient provider in West Union.

Patients may also choose to participate in local support groups like Narcotics Anonymous and Alcoholics Anonymous, or enroll with another treatment facility like Ohio Recovery Center in Van Wert.

Adams County Substance Use & Overdose Data

15 individuals died from accidental drug overdoses in Adams County in 2020 alone.

While this figure is far less than those reported by more populous areas of Ohio, Adams County’s 2020 age-adjusted rate of accidental drug overdoses (64.5/100,000) was significantly higher than Ohio’s overall average during the same period (45.6/100,00).

According to the Ohio Department of Health, fentanyl and other synthetic opioids remain the deadliest drugs of abuse for overdose in the state by a wide margin, followed by stimulants like methamphetamine and cocaine, alcohol, and prescription drugs.

All of these substances are also known to have severe long-term physical and psychological health effects, greatly reducing the length and quality of life of those who chronically abuse them.

Alcohol & Drug Rehab Options In Adams County, Ohio

At this time, with the exception of the West Union area, most portions of Adams County lack local access to professional rehab facilities. However, many providers are available elsewhere in Ohio, offering a wide variety of personalized treatment services.

Medical Detox

When some stop using drugs or alcohol they experience intense withdrawal symptoms like drug cravings, sleep problems, illness, depression, and even hallucinations, seizures, or suicidal impulses.

Because of these risks, it is strongly recommended that those seeking treatment for alcohol or drug addiction begin the process with the security of an inpatient or outpatient medically assisted detoxification program.

Inpatient Treatment Programs

Inpatient treatment is strongly recommended for those with severe forms of substance use disorder, co-occurring mental health disorders, and those who have unsuccessfully attempted to quit drugs or alcohol in the past.

Inpatient programs last for 30 to 90 days and may include individual and group therapy, behavioral therapies, family therapy, dual diagnosis care, and alternative therapies.

Outpatient Treatment Programs

Outpatient programs are diverse and widely available, allowing participants to receive the level of care that’s right for them while they continue to live at home during the treatment process.

Common outpatient formats to consider include regular outpatient treatment programs, part-time intensive outpatient programs (IOPs), and full-time partial hospitalization programs (PHPs).

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)

MAT programs are built on an evidence-based treatment approach that uses FDA-approved medications (methadone, buprenorphine, naltrexone, etc.) in combination with counseling to address opioid or alcohol addiction.

This combination approach has been shown to be highly effective in helping participants reduce their long-term risk of relapse and overdose.
