From Columbus to Cleveland, inpatient and outpatient treatment settings in Ohio address heroin addiction with medical detox, medication-assisted treatment, behavioral therapy, and ongoing mental health care.

Every year, about 5,000 Ohio residents die of opioid overdoses, often after developing opioid addiction. One of the most addictive opioids is heroin. This powerful drug is typically injected, snorted, or smoked

When searching for a heroin addiction treatment program in Ohio, you will first need to determine what type of treatment you need. Like the rest of the United States, Ohio has both inpatient and outpatient treatment programs.

Inpatient Treatment

At an inpatient program (also called a residential treatment program), you will live at a treatment center and receive 24/7 care. This type of treatment is usually recommended for people with moderate-to-severe addictions.

Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Many people with heroin addiction also have other mental health concerns, such as:

  • anxiety
  • depression
  • posttraumatic stress disorder
  • bipolar disorder
  • schizophrenia

These conditions can make your heroin addiction worse. That’s why people with co-occurring mental health concerns should choose treatment facilities that offer dual diagnosis treatment

This type of inpatient treatment addresses heroin addiction alongside other mental health conditions.

Outpatient Treatment

At an outpatient program, you will live at home while regularly visiting a treatment center. There are three main types of outpatient programs:

  • partial hospitalization programs (PHPs), which typically offer treatment 5 or more days a week
  • intensive outpatient programs (IOPs), which typically offer treatment 3 to 5 days a week
  • standard outpatient programs (OPs), which  typically offer treatment once or twice a week

Outpatient treatment is usually recommended for people with mild addictions and strong support systems at home. It can also be a good option if you have recently completed inpatient treatment and want to transition to a less intensive form of care.

Heroin Addiction Treatment Plans

When you enter a heroin addiction treatment program in Ohio, a team of medical professionals will evaluate your condition and create your personalized treatment plan. Most treatment plans for heroin addiction include the following treatment services:

Medical Detox

One of the most common symptoms of heroin addiction is physical dependence. That means your body starts relying on heroin to function properly.

If you stop using it, you may experience withdrawal symptoms such as anxiety, insomnia, nausea, sweating, and shaking. Because these symptoms are so uncomfortable, they cause many people to relapse.

Luckily, medical detox can make your withdrawal symptoms easier to manage. During detox, medical staff will constantly monitor your health as you get heroin out of your system. They will also take steps to keep you as comfortable as possible.

For example, they may prescribe medications to ease certain withdrawal symptoms, such as sleep aids and anti-nausea medications.

Therapy

There are many different types of therapy for heroin addiction. The most popular types include cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), contingency management, and group therapy.

In CBT, you will learn how to change unhelpful thoughts and beliefs, such as “I will never recover” or “I’m not good enough.”

You will also learn how to cope with triggers. Triggers are people, places, feelings, or other stimuli that make you want to use heroin. They often cause intense cravings that can lead to relapse. Your therapist will teach you specific ways to cope with triggers and cravings.

In contingency management, you will receive vouchers when you pass drug tests or achieve other recovery-related milestones. These vouchers can be exchanged for items that help you build a fulfilling, sober life, such as gym memberships, movie passes, and gift cards.

In group therapy, you will learn important coping skills alongside other people recovering from heroin addiction. This type of therapy can help you feel less alone as you navigate recovery.

Medication-Assisted Treatment

In medication-assisted treatment (MAT), doctors will prescribe FDA-approved medications to make your recovery easier. These medications may include:

According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), MAT helps people with heroin addiction stay engaged in recovery, avoid criminal activity, and maintain employment.

Aftercare Planning

Before you leave your treatment program, your treatment providers will help you design an aftercare plan. This plan will include strategies designed to promote your long-term recovery, such as:

  • ongoing therapy
  • support groups
  • wellness activities, such as exercise, yoga, and meditation
  • assistance with housing, education, or employment
