Choosing a rehabilitation center can be intimidating. Knowing what to consider can make the process easier and lead to the best results for recovery. These factors include your personal goals, the facility’s accreditation and location, and more.

When drug addiction gets to the point of requiring medical treatment, the next step is to find a rehabilitation center.

People may be unaware of the different types of addiction treatment that rehabilitation centers offer or what type of care they should be seeking.

Being unsure can create an unsatisfying experience, which may result in relapse. Below we’ll review some factors to consider when choosing the right rehab facility for you.

Determine Your Goals And Needs

Before exploring different rehab centers, consider your or your loved one’s needs and goals. There are many different types of drug rehabilitation programs and evidence-based addiction treatment options.

Everyone’s history with substance abuse differs, along with their physical, emotional, and mental health. All of these should be taken into consideration when choosing a facility.

Here are some questions that can help you determine your needs:

  • How long have you been experiencing substance abuse?
  • When did substance abuse begin?
  • Which substances have been abused? (Cocaine, opioid, alcohol abuse?)
  • Is there a family history of substance abuse?
  • Do you have any co-occurring mental health disorders?
  • What is your current living situation?
  • Is immediate medical attention required?
  • Do you have specific needs related to your demographic? (Veterans, LGBTQ+, children of abuse?)
  • Do you need to take time off work?
  • Are there children who need to be accounted for?

These questions can help determine how severe someone’s addiction is and what program will best serve them.

The overarching goal of addiction treatment centers is to help people establish sobriety. However, a person’s unique goals can influence which rehab center they choose.

Specific addiction treatment goals might include:

  • healing trauma from a violent or abusive past
  • managing anxiety, depression, or other mental health symptoms
  • being part of a community of sober-minded people
  • learning how to incorporate recovery into work and social settings

6 Factors To Consider When Choosing A Rehab Center

After determining goals and needs, it’s time to start looking into addiction treatment facilities. There are many drug and alcohol rehab centers in Ohio to consider.

Although it may be tempting to just pick one, making sure that the center provides a high standard of care and treatment options that align with your needs can lead to the best results.

Credentials And Accreditations

Various accrediting bodies help ensure that the care provided by addiction treatment centers meets or exceeds a standard level of quality.

The Joint Commission (TJC) is a national nonprofit organization that accredits rehab centers based on their performance records and patient results.

Another well-recognized accrediting body is the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF), which grants accreditation to facilities that meet its healthcare standards.

The facility should also have certification from the Ohio Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services.

Inpatient Vs. Outpatient Care

There are two main types of addiction treatment programs: inpatient and outpatient treatment.

The main difference between the two is that inpatient programs require the person to stay onsite. With outpatient programs, people receive treatment and care at the facility and then return home or to a sober house overnight.

Inpatient drug rehab centers can help people through withdrawal with 24/7 monitoring and prevent relapse in a drug-free environment.

People with moderate to severe addiction usually benefit most from inpatient programs. Those with mild substance abuse may prefer an outpatient program to keep up with work or school.

Inpatient treatment is preferred by some because it is all-encompassing. However, many people benefit from outpatient programs.

There is no statistical difference between the effectiveness of outpatient versus inpatient care. What’s most important is choosing a level of care that best reflects your treatment needs.

Treatment Options

Addiction treatment options have developed over the years. Different rehab centers might offer different approaches to recovery.

A majority of facilities offer multiple evidence-based practices. For example, a facility may provide cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT), group therapy, and holistic treatment options.

Here are a few other addiction treatment services to consider:

  • People with co-occurring mental health disorders benefit from dual-diagnosis treatment.
  • People with opioid or alcohol addictions might do well with medication-assisted treatment to help with withdrawal and cravings.
  • Combat veterans, childhood abuse survivors, members of the LGBTQ+ community, and others may benefit from trauma-based care.
  • Some people may prefer a facility that serves women only or men only.

Some people might also prefer a treatment facility that offers social activities, such as field trips, or quiet time in nature.

Location And Atmosphere

An addiction treatment center’s location can play a big part in how successful a person’s recovery is. Many people want to stay close to home, but this can hinder treatment.

Proximity to friends and hangouts can trigger a relapse. Beginning recovery tends to go better when people don’t have access to an environment that supports their substance use.

However, this isn’t always necessary or possible. Sometimes, people benefit from staying close to supportive family members or a particular sober community.

The atmosphere of the facility is also important. Is the program LBGTQ+ friendly? Does it offer more of a clinical environment or a relaxed setting? Is it located in an urban or a natural setting?

Length Of Treatment

Sobriety is a life-long process. Health professionals agree that long-term treatment is the often best way to recover from addiction. But every person begins the path to recovery differently.

Typically, an inpatient stay is three to six months. However, there are one-year and even two-year programs. There are also shorter options, such as 14-, 30-, and 45-day programs.

People choose their length of treatment before they enter treatment. Based on how recovery is going, they may be asked if they want to extend treatment.

Cost Of Treatment

Treatment isn’t necessarily cheap, and everyone’s financial situation is different. Many people are budget-minded and looking for low-cost addiction treatment options.

A facility with a variety of treatment options, trained staff, and amenities is usually more expensive. But state-funded facilities and those covered by insurance also help change lives.

If you plan on using your health insurance, look into what’s covered to help determine your costs. Every insurance plan is different, but in Ohio, rehab is usually covered.

Although the financial cost of addiction treatment is important to consider, the cost of addiction itself can be very high. Many people find that getting the help that fits all of their needs is worth it.
